New on HBO Max in September 2026

HBO Max adds 60 movies in September 2026, led by A Clockwork Orange, Rain Man and Magnolia. Most of the shelf arrived in one drop on September 2: 48 titles, from The Maltese Falcon to Little Fockers. Another 300 leave before the end of the month, 297 of them on September 30. That departing shelf runs from the 1920s to the 2020s, 233 of the 300 made before 1980, and it takes Seven Samurai, Modern Times and Tokyo Story with it.

A Cincinnati car dealer discovers the brother he never knew about, an autistic savant, and takes him on a cross-country road trip for the wrong reasons. Las Vegas blackjack included. The 88 on Rotten Tomatoes is 23 points clear of its Metascore, the widest gap in the top ten.

3. Magnolia (1999)

One day in the San Fernando Valley, told across a dying father, a game show host, a boy genius, a lonely cop and half a dozen others whose stories fold into each other. At 189 minutes it is the longest arrival of the month.

4. The Revenant (2015)

An 1820s fur trapper is mauled by a grizzly, left for dead by his own party, and crawls through a frontier winter to get even. Based on the novel and loosely on a true story. A survival western first and a revenge film second.

Dublin, the 1980s. A boy starts a band to impress a girl and ends up with music videos, a brother who knows better, and a way out of a bad school. A 95 on Rotten Tomatoes, second only to The Maltese Falcon this month.

A San Francisco private eye, a client who lies, three crooks and a statuette they would all kill for. The film noir template, in black and white. Its 99 on Rotten Tomatoes is the best of any September arrival.

A faded Southern belle moves into her sister's New Orleans apartment and collides with a brother-in-law who has no patience for her. A stage play on film, black and white, and a 97 on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

A novelist crashes in a Colorado blizzard and wakes up in the care of his biggest fan, who does not like how his last book ended. Psychological thriller, based on the novel, most of it in one bedroom.

9. The Last Samurai (2003)

An American soldier is hired to modernize the Japanese army, is captured by the samurai he was sent to crush, and switches sides. Critics were cooler than audiences here: a 65 on Rotten Tomatoes against a 7.8 on IMDb.

10. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

A washed-up actor who once played a superhero stakes his comeback on a Broadway play, and his old alter ego will not stop talking to him. Dark comedy with a strain of magic realism, set in and around Times Square during the run-up to opening night.

Take this over The Revenant. It beats it by 13 points on Rotten Tomatoes and 11 on Metacritic, and it is 37 minutes shorter.

  A new girl at school falls in with three outcasts who practice witchcraft, and the spells start working. Teen occult drama.

  In 1979 a small crew drives out to a rural Texas farmhouse to shoot an adult film, and the elderly couple who own it take an interest. A 1970s-style slasher with a 94 on Rotten Tomatoes, and the start of the trilogy Pearl and MaXXXine finish.

Leaving HBO Max in September 2026

300 movies leave HBO Max in September, and 297 of them go on the same day, September 30. Only three leave earlier: Sing Sing on September 21, Queer on September 26 and The Crimson Pirate on September 29. The rest is one shelf cleared at once: 223 of the 300 are dramas, 62 are tagged black and white, 17 are silent films, and the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s account for 164 of them.
