Halloween movie night has one rule: nobody wants to be the one who picked the dud. So here are the best new Halloween movies on streaming, five per service, all added in the last 30 days and ranked by rating. The short version: The Silence of the Lambs on Peacock is the best of the bunch, The Thing on Prime Video is the best one with a monster in it, and Coraline on Peacock is the one for a room with kids in it.

Prime Video and Peacock did most of the stocking up this month, HBO Max managed three, and Disney+ and Apple TV+ sat Halloween out entirely. If someone on the couch refuses to be scared, each section ends with the best new thrillers. That is also where Die Hard went: it just landed on Hulu, but it is a Christmas movie, and we are not starting that argument in October.

New Halloween movies on Netflix

Netflix has one standout and then a drop: The Sixth Sense at 8.2 on IMDb, and nothing else above 6.6. Its scary movies trickled in a few at a time, with the biggest batch on October 1. The full movie lineup is on the Netflix what-to-watch page.

1. The Sixth Sense (1999)

The Sixth Sense poster

107 min · IMDb 8.2 · RT 86 · Metascore 64 · October 1

A child psychologist in Philadelphia takes on a nine-year-old patient who is hiding something. It carries no horror genre tag, but ghost, supernatural horror and psychological horror are all in its keywords, and it is the ghost story on this page for people who do not want a slasher. Audiences are well ahead of critics on it: an 8.2 on IMDb against a 64 Metascore.

2. Oculus (2014)

Oculus poster

104 min · IMDb 6.6 · RT 75 · Metascore 61 · September 25

A woman sets out to clear her brother of a murder conviction by proving that a haunted mirror did it. Haunted-house horror with hallucination and skepticism in the keywords, so the film spends its time arguing about what is real. A 75 on Rotten Tomatoes against a 6.6 on IMDb, so critics were the warmer audience.

3. Evil Dead (2013)

Evil Dead poster

91 min · IMDb 6.5 · RT 63 · Metascore 57 · October 1

Five people go to a remote forest cabin to get one of them through withdrawal, someone reads aloud from the Book of the Dead they find there, and a demon takes the patient first. A remake and survival horror. At 91 minutes it is the shortest film in the Netflix five.

4. Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

100 min · IMDb 6.2 · RT 73 · Metascore 57 · October 1

The sequel. A college student who has already died her way through one time loop lands in a parallel version of it, with the masked killer back and her friends rearranged. Slasher by keyword, comedy and sci-fi by genre, campy by its own tag, and the lightest pick on the Netflix list.

5. Daniel Isn't Real (2019)

Daniel Isn't Real poster

101 min · IMDb 6.1 · RT 84 · Metascore 61 · September 29

A troubled college freshman brings back his childhood imaginary friend to cope with a trauma, and the friend turns out to be vindictive. Horror and mystery, with mental illness and a trapped soul both in the keywords. Its 84 on Rotten Tomatoes is second only to The Sixth Sense in this five, though the audience sample is small: 253 TMDB votes.

Next in line: Knock at the Cabin, The Boogeyman and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. If nobody wants to be scared, the best new thrillers on Netflix are Disconnect, Don and Don 2.

New Halloween movies on Hulu

Hulu stocked up for Halloween this week: all but two of its new horror movies arrived on October 5 and 6. It is also the most modern list on the page, with three of its top five released since 2018, the most of any service here. For the longer shelf see the best horror movies on Hulu, and for everything else the Hulu what-to-watch page.

1. The Fly (1986)

A scientist tests his teleporter on himself with a housefly in the pod, and the transformation takes the rest of the film. Body horror, a remake, and a tragedy by its own tags. It also landed on Peacock on October 1, so either subscription gets you to it.

2. Scream (1996)

3. Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary poster

128 min · IMDb 7.3 · RT 90 · Metascore 87 · October 6

A family buries its matriarch and what she left behind is not in the will. Grief first, then a séance, a dollhouse and a coven. The critics' pick of the batch: its 87 Metascore is the best in the Hulu five. It arrived on Prime Video the same day.

4. The Substance (2024)

A fading celebrity in Los Angeles buys a black market drug that creates a younger, better version of herself. Body horror as satire about beauty standards and aging, with dark comedy in the keywords, and the newest film in the Hulu five. Take The Fly over it if the clock matters: both are body horror, The Fly rates higher on IMDb and Metascore, and it is 45 minutes shorter.

5. Midsommar (2019)

Midsommar poster

147 min · IMDb 7.1 · RT 83 · Metascore 72 · October 6

A grieving woman joins her boyfriend and his anthropologist friends at a remote Swedish commune for a festival held every ninety years. Folk horror in daylight: the sun never sets, and the keywords run from paganism to human sacrifice. At 147 minutes it is the longest film ranked on this page.

Next in line: Heretic, Barbarian and Soulm8te. The best new thrillers on Hulu are a franchise: Die Hard, Die Hard: With a Vengeance and True Lies, all added October 6.

New Halloween movies on HBO Max

HBO Max added only three horror movies in 30 days, so this is the whole list and not a top five. One of the three is the highest-rated possession film on the page. The rest of the catalog is on the HBO Max what-to-watch page.

1. The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist poster

122 min · IMDb 8.1 · RT 78 · Metascore 83 · September 28

A girl in Washington is possessed, her mother runs out of other explanations, and two priests are what is left. Based on the novel, religious horror with a crisis of faith in the keywords, and Halloween is in there too. Among the horror-tagged films on this page, only The Thing on Prime Video has a higher IMDb score.

2. Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland poster

88 min · IMDb 7.5 · RT 89 · Metascore 73 · September 13

The comedy option. A road trip across a zombie America with a loner, a hunt for a Twinkie and an amusement park at the end. The gore is played for laughs, and it is done in 88 minutes.

3. Backrooms (2026)

Backrooms poster

111 min · IMDb 6.8 · Metascore 76 · September 23

A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, and behind it is a liminal space in another dimension. Found footage set in the 1990s, based on a web series, with analog horror and body horror both in the keywords. The only 2026 release ranked on this page.

The new thrillers on HBO Max outnumber the horror: Ocean's Eleven, Eyes Wide Shut and Saltburn lead them.

New Halloween movies on Prime Video

Prime Video added the most Halloween movies by a distance, in bulk drops on September 7, September 26 and 28, and October 6. The October 6 drop brought the classic monsters: Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and Dracula all arrived that day. The Prime Video what-to-watch page tracks the rest.

1. The Thing (1982)

The Thing poster

109 min · IMDb 8.2 · RT 85 · Metascore 57 · September 7

An Antarctic research station, a snowstorm, and an alien that takes the shape of whatever it kills, so nobody can trust anybody and the blood test is the set piece. The highest IMDb score of any horror-tagged film on this page. The 57 Metascore is the outlier next to an 8.2 from audiences.

2. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Hereditary poster

128 min · IMDb 7.3 · RT 90 · Metascore 87 · October 6

The same film that ranks third on Hulu, added to Prime Video the same day, so either subscription gets you the family, the séance and the dollhouse. On a Prime Video list where the other four were all released before 1985, it is the only one from this century.

Next in line: Dracula and Videodrome. The best new thrillers on Prime Video all sit at 8.0 or higher on IMDb: Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Memento, The Terminator and Touch of Evil.

New Halloween movies on Peacock

Peacock did its Halloween stocking in one go: most of its new horror movies landed on October 1. The deeper shelf is in the best horror movies on Peacock, and the Peacock what-to-watch page covers the rest.

2. Coraline (2009)

Coraline poster

100 min · IMDb 7.8 · RT 91 · Metascore 80 · October 1

The one that works with kids in the room, and the only animated film on this page. An 11-year-old finds a hidden door to a better version of her life, and staying has a price. Stop-motion, dark fantasy, and horror for children by its own keyword.

5. Saw (2004)

Saw poster

103 min · IMDb 7.6 · RT 50 · Metascore 46 · October 1

Two men wake up chained in an abandoned bathroom with a tape that explains the game. Death-game horror, with splatter and extreme violence in the keywords, so know the room before you press play. Audiences and critics split harder on it than on anything else in the Peacock five.

Next in line: The Fly, The Crow, The Omen and Scream. The best new thrillers on Peacock are No Country for Old Men, Sin City and Collateral.

Halloween movies on Paramount+, Disney+ and Apple TV+

Slim pickings. Paramount+ added one qualifying title in 30 days, and Disney+ and Apple TV+ added none. The full shelves are on the Paramount+, Disney+ and Apple TV+ what-to-watch pages.

The thrillers did better. Tuner on Paramount+ is a 2026 release with a 94 on Rotten Tomatoes, and Zero Dark Thirty on Apple TV+ has a 95 Metascore. The only new arrival in either genre on Disney+ is Kraven the Hunter.
